Windsor Raceway History

Windsor Raceway officially opened on October 22, 1965 for its first season of harness racing. Castle Direct driven by Fred Roloson was the first horse to win a parimutuel race at Windsor Raceway in a time of 2:10. The attendance the opening day was 5,136 for a 9 race card. The handle was $194,204.

Windsor Raceway had the all-weather Tartan surface then. It enabled racing in inclement weather and earned the approval of horsemen. The Tartan surface remained in use until the late 1970s when it was converted to a spiral graded limestone surface, which is in use until today.

For the first twenty-nine years, live harness racing at Windsor was contested during the six month season of October through April. In 1995, in celebration of the track's 30th anniversary, live racing was held year round. With the 1990's came simulcasting -- the ability to bet on races being held at other racetracks.

Windsor Raceway was quick to pick up on this new technology. Live racing brought patrons to the track for only an evening of wagering entertainment up to five nights a week. Simulcasting has expanded exponentially to the point where Windsor Raceway is now open 364 days a year, from noon to midnight with continuous betting action available on up to ten different tracks each day. Windsor is looked upon as the leader of simulcasting in Canada.

The Provincial Cup is Windsor Raceway's annual premier event with horses vying for a purse of $200,000. This tradition laden pacing event provides a past winners list including Cardigan Bay, Armbro Nesbit, Cam Fella, On the Road Again, Falcon Seelster, Frugal Gourmet, Camluck and Western Hanover.

Both Presidential Ball and Pacific Rocket, the 1993 and 1994 winners respectively, matched Windsor's standing record for 3 year old colts and geldings with a time of 1:52:3.

Over recent years many things have changed at Windsor Raceway, particularly the addition of Casino gambling and Lotteries.

In January of 1999, the Ontario Lottery Corporation introduced slot machines at all participating racetracks in Ontario. Windsor Raceway was the first racetrack in Ontario to implement them.

Since then slots have boosted purses and quality of racing. Profits from the Slots also meant a better experience for track visitors.

In 2000, Windsor Raceway completed the total makeover of the clubhouse. The track also continues to invest in the latest in tote system betting technologies in an effort to stay on the cutting edge.
